Finasteride is a medication classified as a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. It is primarily used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern baldness.
Finasteride is used to treat conditions such as:
Finasteride works by blocking the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase. This helps improve urine flow and reduce the risk of symptoms like hair loss or baldness. It does this by reducing the production of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, that causes the hair to regrow and new hair to appear.
Finasteride is usually taken orally as a tablet. The ideal dosage is one tablet taken once daily and, when needed, once daily for 7 days. The medication's effects can last for up to 10 days.
Follow the prescribed dosage and duration of treatment as prescribed by your healthcare provider or dermatologist. This medication's use may increase in a specific patient population.
The medication's side effects can include nausea, breast enlargement, decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction, and reduced muscle mass, for instance.
In rare cases, finasteride can lead to increased risk of multiple sexual partners. It may increase the risk of transmitting complications like HIV, making sexual partners more likely.
Finasteride is not recommended for use in children or in those for whom sexual activity is adversely affected by BPH or male pattern baldness. It may cause impairment of blood flow to the penis (reduced blood flow to the penis, see impaired blood flow as side effects).
The medication's safety has not been established for use in women.
The use of finasteride for treating male pattern baldness is contraindicated in individuals with a known or suspected efficacy for prostate health or for patients with certain medical conditions.
The medication may raise serum levels of DHT, causing symptoms like pain in the testicles, increased breast size, and increased hair loss.
If you notice any serious side effects or alternative treatments are contemplated, stop using the medication and contact your healthcare provider immediately.
The use of finasteride for male pattern baldness is not recommended in individuals with a history of benign prostatic hypertrophy (enlarged prostate, and men with a family history of BPH).
The medication works by reducing the production of a female hormone called DHT, which causes changes to the hair growth cycle and ultimately leads to a reduction in male pattern baldness.
The medication's effects may increase male pattern baldness treatment with finasteride.
The use of finasteride for treating benign prostatic hypertrophy (enlarged prostate, and men with a family history of BPH) is not recommended in individuals with a history of male breast cancer or prostate cancer. It may increase the risk of transmitting complications, making sexual partners more likely.
The medication's side effects can include nausea, breast enlargement, decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction, and erectile dysfunction- These are usually mild and may go away on their own after you finish treatment. If these symptoms occur, stop using the medication and contact your healthcare provider.
Propecia contains a medicine called finasteride. This belongs to a group of medicinescalled Type II ‘5-alpha reductase inhibitors’.
Propecia is used for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (also known as androgeneticalopecia). Propecia increases hair growth on the scalp and prevents further hair loss inmen. Men with mild to moderate, but not complete hair loss, can benefit from usingPropecia.
How does the hair on your head grow?On average your hair grows about 1 centimetre (half an inch) each month. Hair growsfrom hair follicles, which are located under your skin.
A single scalp hair grows continuously for 2-4 years (growth phase) and then stopsgrowing for 2-4 months (rest phase). After this the hair falls out. In its place a newhealthy hair begins to grow, and the cycle is repeated. The hairs on your scalp arealways in different stages of this cycle so it is normal to lose scalp hair every day.
What is male pattern hair loss?
Male pattern hair loss is a common condition in which men experience thinning of thehair on the scalp, often resulting in a receding hairline and/or balding on the top of thehead. This condition is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic factors and aparticular hormone, DHT (dihydrotestosterone).
DHT causes a decrease in the growth phase and thinning of the hair (see picture). Thisleads to male pattern hair loss. These changes can start to occur in some men in their20s and become more common with age. Once hair loss has occurred over a longperiod of time, the hair may be permanently lost.
